Small School, Thriving Students

When parents begin looking for a school, they often start with the practical questions.

What is the curriculum?
How big are the classes?
What does the day look like?
How far is the drive?

But underneath those logistical questions, there is usually a deeper one quietly shaping the whole search: will my child be known here?

As someone who works in admissions — and as a parent myself — I know how much that question matters. Families are not only looking for a strong education. They are looking for a place where their child will be understood, cared for, and supported as the whole person they are.

That is one of the things that makes Richmond Waldorf School so special.

With approximately 190 students, Richmond Waldorf School offers a learning environment that feels personal in all the right ways. Ours is a small school community where children are not easily lost in the crowd. They are known by their teachers, greeted by familiar faces every day, and held in relationships that help them feel safe, confident, and connected.

Our average student-teacher ratio of 15:1 certainly helps create that kind of environment, but what families often notice most when they visit is not just the number. It is the feeling. There is a warmth here, and a sense that the adults in the building are genuinely tuned in to the children in front of them.

Our Faculty are caring, attentive, and deeply invested in the needs of their classes and students. They are not simply moving through a lesson plan or managing a room. They are paying attention to how a child is settling in, where they may need encouragement or repetition, and where they are ready to rise to a challenge.

That kind of attentiveness and attunement matters.

Children thrive when they feel seen. They thrive when they trust the adults around them. They thrive when there is room for their personality, their pace, their strengths, and even their struggles to be understood as part of their learning journey.

At Richmond Waldorf School, that way of seeing children is woven into the fabric of the school. As a Waldorf school, we believe that education should meet children where they are developmentally and support growth in a thoughtful, human way. We value different personalities and learning styles. We understand that children unfold over time. And we believe that strong relationships are not separate from learning, they are what make meaningful learning possible.

This is one of the beautiful things about a small school. It creates the conditions for connection. Teachers can know their students well. Families can build real relationships with the school. Children can develop a sense of belonging that gives them the confidence and comfort to stretch, grow, and do their best work.

Again and again, I hear from families that this is what they are hoping to find: a school that feels not only academically sound, but deeply caring. A place where their child will not just attend, but belong.

At Richmond Waldorf School, “small school” is about much more than size. It is about creating a community where students can truly thrive and where they are known, valued, and supported in becoming fully themselves. And that is something many families feel the moment they walk through our doors.
