Knowing Our Neighbors
Community Enrichment Parent Education Event
Thursday, September 27, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Grades Student Guest Presentations
Friday, September 28 (following Friday Gathering)
Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend our first community enrichment evening of the school year! On Thursday, September 27 from 6:00-7:30 p.m., we will welcome our neighbors from the Virginia Treatment Center for Children and the Children’s Hospital of Richmond to help us learn more about the services they provide and to strengthen our neighborly relationships. The RWS Parents Association will provide light refreshments and free childcare for parents attending this session.
Representatives from the VTCC and CHoR will share information and answer questions about the populations they serve and about how we as RWS parents can best address any inquiries our students or others may have about children who require long-term hospitalization for medical needs or short-term hospitalizations related to mental illness. Our guest speakers will return to RWS the following morning on Friday, September 28th to meet with the grades students after Friday Gathering and to provide them with similar, age appropriate information. Parents are welcome to attend these sessions on Friday morning as well.
Mental illness and chronic medical conditions in children can be taboo subjects, and misinformation, fears and misperceptions can abound. Nevertheless, we are confident this programming will enlighten our community, foster compassion and help inform us all – faculty, staff, parents and children – about how we can each do our part to be the best neighbors possible.
As we settle into our new campus, we will continue to explore partnerships and community service opportunities with our nearby neighbors and within the larger Northside community.
Please don’t miss this important educational and community development evening.
We look forward to seeing you on the 27th!
