It’s an exciting week for third graders as they begin their introduction to stringed instruments. Music instruction progresses alongside students’ development, moving from voice and movement to the recorder to stringed instruments midway through the third grade year. Students are eager to take on the challenge of the violin or cello as they continue to build fine and gross motor skills.

At the start of their strings journey, the ringing and singing tones of the open strings of the instruments are learned through songs that are sung while the strings are plucked. By the end of the third grade year, the students will be playing simple folk songs with the bow. Along the way, the children are practicing at home and honing their new skills.

The Middle School years are filled with immense growth and change. At Richmond Waldorf School, our students are nurtured in small classes by teachers and peers who care about them.

Our middle schoolers dive deep into subject matter, often involving experiential learning. During their work in Geology, they quite literally dive into the caves; during their study of Shakespeare, they take in a performance at the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriar’s Playhouse. Extracurriculars are embedded into our curriculum, with each grade having a class play. Team sports take an inclusive approach, and our 5th through 8th graders compete together with enthusiasm.
