A Joyful Beginning: Celebrating Our New Playground!
Richmond Waldorf School began the new school year with a joyful celebration as families, faculty, alumni, trustees, friends, and neighbors gathered for our Playground Ribbon Cutting and Back-to-School Picnic on August 24.
It was wonderful to see such a large crowd on campus—reconnecting after the summer, welcoming new families, and sharing in the excitement of this long-awaited moment. In a fitting reflection of the community effort behind the project, representatives from our faculty, Board of Trustees, alumni, and wider community came together to cut the ribbon and officially open the renovated playground.
A Space Transformed
The transformation includes new KOMPAN play equipment, improvements to the play and soccer field, and a reimagined bike pump track. Each element was thoughtfully designed to invite movement, exploration, healthy risk-taking, and creative outdoor play. The new pump track also strengthens our biking program, which provides students from Early Childhood through eighth grade with opportunities to develop coordination, confidence, and practical skills.
At Richmond Waldorf School, movement and outdoor play are essential parts of a child’s development—not simply breaks from classroom learning. Time spent climbing, balancing, biking, building, imagining, and playing together helps children strengthen their bodies, solve problems, form friendships, and deepen their connection to the natural world.

Gratitude and Joy
The energy on campus captured everything we hoped this new space would bring: children eager to explore, families spending time together, and generations of the RWS community celebrating side by side.
We are deeply grateful to the donors, volunteers, families, faculty, staff, trustees, alumni, and community partners whose generosity, time, and care helped bring this vision to life. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the celebration such a meaningful beginning to the school year.
We look forward to seeing our students learn, grow, and make many joyful memories in this special new space!
