Strategic Path Update – June 2026
Dear Richmond Waldorf School Community,
With a year and a half behind us on our five-year plan, let’s take a moment to imagine when all the goals and initiatives of the 2030 Strategic Path are fulfilled. What would this mean for the RWS community?
We would have:
- an enriched middle school program with expanded learning opportunities — both curricular and extra-curricular.
- a renewed pedagogical program that meets the needs of all current students while servicing them socially, emotionally, and academically and supporting them through a comprehensive feedback loop between the school and families.
- a service-minded school with meaningful and authentic volunteer expectations and deeper connection points between the grade levels.
- a well-connected school within the Northside community through expanded partnership and service of other organizations.
- an enhanced campus that meets the programmatic and community needs of the school.
- a recruitment effort for new teachers, administrators, and staff that is linked to key partnerships and university programs all while building a more deeply rooted community through Anthroposophical study.
- a strong retention and satisfaction of our current teachers, administrators, and staff through improved onboarding, professional development offerings, and partnerships with other Waldorf schools.
In the coming years, this path will take us far through our collective efforts. There are so many people — employees and volunteers alike — committed to the individual pathways and stepping stones that make up this combined journey towards the 2030 Strategic Path. Progress towards these initiatives has been made by many members of the RWS community thus far. Below is a representation of those milestones of progress.

INITIATIVE
Serve with the School Community
MILESTONES
- Completed internal review of volunteer expectations and commissioned external review of other independent schools
- Developed a working catalog of volunteer opportunities categorized by frequency (continuous, occasional, one-time) and location (classroom, school-wide, special project)
INITIATIVE

- Small improvements to the playscape (with larger ones coming this summer!)
INITIATIVE
Recruit & Retain Talented & Dedicated Employees
MILESTONES

- Hired a Human Resources Coordinator to manage the onboarding process for new employees
- Conducted surveys for new employees to increase clarity in the onboarding process and to support them in their roles and responsibilities
- Increased school’s tuition contribution for Waldorf teacher training programs from 50% to 75% of tuition costs
- Increased percentage of budget dedicated to professional development
- Reinstated comprehensive benefits package including health benefits and a retirement plan
INITIATIVE
Deepen Collaborative & Generative Governance
MILESTONES
- Deepened the connections between the governing bodies through joint meetings to address combined priorities and responsibilities
- Initiated efforts toward a co-governance manual in order to clarify roles, responsibilities, areas of authority, mutual work, interrelationships, and communication channels
As more of these initiatives see substantial progress like what is noted above, it brings to mind an important consideration:
When this long-range strategic plan is fulfilled, what will be some potential needs of the school community that will require us to evolve and expand? How will we need to adapt to meet these needs?
The year 2030 will be here before we know it. Considering the roadmap we have built to get us there, it is my hope that we can reflect in that moment on many years of collective work that brought us together in a new way to chart our next path. All pathways have been started with some already completed. I am incredibly grateful for the many Path Navigators and Path Supporters who have taken some of the 27 pathways that, when merged together, make up the comprehensive 2030 Strategic Path.
We remain on the Path — taking steps — together. The impact will be felt for years to come as this is truly legacy-level work we are doing.
Together We Serve,

Andrew Ross,
Executive Director
